3+ years in applied research/ML with proven impact on real systems.

Deep familiarity with LLM evaluation, metrics, and eval pipeline building.

Strong experience with agentic search systems (retrieval, tool use, generation, rigorous evaluation).

Solid statistical foundation for experiment design and result interpretation.

Experience in the legal domain (understanding document structure, reasoning, AI evaluation challenges).

Strong communication skills to present ambiguous findings to diverse audiences.

Comfortable setting direction and operating with high autonomy in an early-stage environment.

Nice to Have

Experience building eval infrastructure (annotation, dataset versioning, automated regression).

Familiarity with fine-tuning or RLHF for domain-specific models.

Background in legaltech, compliance, or regulated B2B SaaS.

Experience hiring or mentoring junior researchers.

About the Role

As an Machine Learning Engineer, you will be instrumental in shaping the future of legal AI at Arcline. You'll lead the charge in measuring, evaluating, and continuously improving our AI systems, owning the entire research lifecycle from conceptualization to tangible product impact. This role demands both rigorous methodological expertise and a passion for shipping transformative work.

Design and own evaluation frameworks for Arcline's AI systems, covering document drafting quality, retrieval relevance, and agent reliability.

Build the core benchmarking infrastructure to enable rigorous, reproducible experiments and track model performance over time.

Define 'good' for legal AI outputs by collaborating with lawyers to develop ground truth datasets and human evaluation protocols.

Identify high-leverage research problems across agentic search, generation, and structured extraction within the legal domain.

Design and execute structured experiments on agentic search architectures, prompting strategies, and fine-tuning approaches.

Translate experimental results into clear, actionable recommendations and integrate relevant LLM/agentic search advances into our systems.

Set the research agenda, prioritize problems, and define Arcline's future research roadmap, with opportunity to build a team.

Partner with legal and operations teams to surface unique failure modes and edge cases not captured by quantitative metrics.

Work directly with engineers to translate research findings into concrete product improvements and production-ready solutions.
